Reading Time: 2 minutes

May 21st marks The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. It is an international observance sanctioned by the United Nations for promoting issues of diversity across the globe.

Diversity day was incorporated as a platform through which communities can appreciate the value of cultural diversity. Even in nature, variety is in constant employ in terms of biodiversity. For all components of a system to function there must be acceptance and understanding. To live together in peace we must accept the eclectic nature of culture, and be willing to embrace it.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay says, "By dint of coordinated action, original initiatives and creativity, this imposed downtime has made it possible to see what is one of humanity's riches: our diversity."

The resulting restriction of movement from the Covid-19 pandemic has led people to look to culture for some sense of normalcy. The strength and resilience of culture, and other forms of creativity are usually accentuated during periods of crisis such as this. Online cultural content creation as well as community involvement are just some of the things we adopt to cope. All these factors represent the building blocks with which human progress develops.

Creating optimal distribution of cultural goods and services, and improving the mobility of cultural artists and professionals is a top priority. It is one of the goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions created in October 2005.

The need for dialogue is ever-present, as a vast majority of the world's conflicts has some cultural relevance. Dialogue on diversity can be a priceless tool for peace and harmony on a global scale. As a driving force of development, cultural diversity is vital in creating an atmosphere of respect and mutual understanding.

All over the world people are finding innovative ways of infusing cultural heritage into public health measures. Check out Cultural Diversity Day for more info on how to celebrate.

Stay safe.
